Indira Gandhi Mahila Mahavidyalaya,Kaithal, came into existence when there was a dire need of an institute for women’s higher education in Kaithal.Due to the conservative attitude and traditional biasness, people of our area were reluctant to send their girls to a co-educational institute for higher education.
Reckoning the need of the hour,A Great Educationist and Social Reformer Smt. Om Parabha Jain, the then Finance Minister, Haryana, undertook the challenge of establishing a women’s college. In this Herculean task she was supported by the members of Bal Shiksha Samiti and her comrades Mahasha Brij Lal, Sh. Ram Gopal Latka,Sh. Bhagwan Dass,Sh.Mohan Bahadur Khurania, Advocate and liberal donor Seth Durga Parsad and others. The Foundation stone of the college was laid down by Sh.Bansi Lal , Chief Minister ,Haryana on April 10th,1970 and the college was named Mahila Mahavidyalaya. The Bal Shikhsha Samiti was already running a Senior Secondary School(now known as Om Prabha Jain Senior Model School). So a separate Mahila Mahavidyalaya Samiti was formed to run the college smoothly.Owning a land ,the College is a remarkable piece of architecture consisting of three storeyed building, designed by Sh, B.P. Mathur, Senior Architect of Punjab University, Chandigarh erected at Karnal Road, Kaithal.
